Ever asked yourself the question: “Who am I?”
Well…Who are you?
Perhaps you are many different people…
Pick up the wooden doll on the table and look at it.
What do people see when they first meet you? What image do you present to the world? Is this the real you?
Open the figure up, and take out the next doll.
Some people become your friends. You hang out together. Do they see a different ‘you’ than a stranger would? Is this the real you?
Open the doll again.
Perhaps just a few people know you really well. Their friendship is something solid in your life. You tell each other things you don’t share with anyone else. Who do they see when they look at you? Is this the real you?
Open the doll again.
There are things you know about yourself that no-one else sees – not even your closest friend. Thoughts, feelings, dreams and hurts. The bits you don’t really want to admit to. Your secret self. Is this the real you?
Open the doll again, and take out the solid centre.
Is there a part of you that only God sees? A part of you he knows even better than you know yourself? Perhaps He sees past all the outer layers to the real you, deep inside. The you that he created. The real you.
A poet once wrote:
I was not hidden from you, God
When I was made in that secret place
You saw my unformed body
Before my mother knew it was there.
You saw all the days of my life spread out
Long before they began.
As you put the pieces of the doll back together, think about this, and ask yourself the question:
“Who am I?”
